What is Supported Living?

A Family-Friendly Guide from AESN Care

When a loved one needs support to live safely but values their independence, supported living can offer the best of both worlds. At AESN Care, we specialise in supported living services that empower adults with various needs to live meaningful, independent lives — with the right level of support in place.

In this guide, we break down what supported living is, who it’s for, and how the process works — including how you can make a referral for care.

What is Supported Living?

Supported living is a care model that enables people to live in their own homes — either alone or with others — while receiving flexible, personalised support. It differs from residential care in one key way: the person has more control. They hold a tenancy or housing agreement, choose their support provider, and lead their daily routine.

At AESN Care, our supported living services are available as 24/7 support or on a part-time, scheduled basis, depending on individual needs.

🧑🤝🧑 Who is Supported Living For?

Supported living is ideal for adults aged 18+ who:

Have a learning disability, autism, or mental health need
Are living with physical disabilities or sensory impairments
Have complex needs but do not need full residential or nursing care
Are elderly and wish to remain in their own home
Are transitioning from hospital, foster care, or a residential setting
Need step-down support or reablement services after a crisis

According to the Care Quality Commission (CQC), supported living enables individuals to “maintain control of their lives, including choice over housing and care.”

🛠 What Support is Provided?

At AESN Care, our support plans are designed collaboratively with the individual, family, and professionals. Depending on the person’s needs, we may provide:

Help with personal care (e.g. bathing, dressing, continence care)
Medication support, reminders, or administration
Meal preparation and healthy eating guidance
Budgeting and managing bills or benefits
Access to education, employment, or volunteering
Support with mental health, communication, or behaviour
Transport and attending appointments
Building social connections and life skills

🏡 What Does a Supported Living Property Look Like?

We offer:

Shared homes (with private bedrooms and shared communal spaces)
Self-contained flats for those who want more privacy
Fully accessible homes for people with mobility or sensory needs
Properties in community locations with access to local amenities

In all cases, the person is not living in a care facility — they are living in their own home, with support.

💷 Who Pays for Supported Living?

Funding can come from:

Local authority adult social care budgets
NHS Continuing Healthcare (CHC) (if eligible)
Housing Benefit (for rent and service charges)
Direct payments or personal budgets
Private or self-funding arrangements

At AESN Care, we help individuals and families navigate funding options, liaise with local authorities, and plan sustainable care packages.
